The fight between Petr Yan and Marcus McGhee should be a crack fest. Both fighters are tough, both are gritty, and neither of them is going down easily. In a division where everybody is chasing Merab Dvalishvili, it is tough to really make an impact and be set for a title fight. But if one of these two can put on a stellar performance, they just might be considered for a possible shot, that is after Cory Sandhagen gets his own.
Yan is a former Bantamweight champion and has fought the who’s who of opponents in the division. Unfortunately for him, the two loses against Aljamain Sterling took a heavy toll on his career. He dropped three fights in a row, having even been defeated and put through a grinder by Merab Dvalishvili. However, it seems that Petr Yan is coming back in a way. He has two wins in a row, both by decision, against Yadong Song and Deiveson Figueiredo, both very good fighters. If he can show his familiar grit in this one, he just might inch his way towards another title shot.
The 10-1, 35-year-old Marcus McGhee may not have been taken seriously before. But after 4-0 in his first four UFC fights and dispatching Jonathan Martinez by massively outlasting him at UFC 309, he made his name heard. The Maniac is as tough as it comes. He has eight KO/TKO wins in his career and has never been stopped. He actually debuted in the UFC with a rear-naked choke win against Journey Newson, and then followed things up with two knockout wins.
This fight is going to be held on its feet, and it is exactly how the two fighters prefer it. While Yan is an exceptional boxer, McGhee is a proven finisher and a more powerful puncher. Not a lot were able to outpace Yan when it comes to boxing, but if McGhee can stifle Yan with his power, then he might be able to dictate the match and win. I am going with a bold prediction here and pit Marcus McGhee to win, and if I were to go even bolder, he might even do it via knockout.
